FRIGHT NIGHT BABBLE

Welcome, Snarklings to the blog of Sloane Masterson...

These overworked villain clichés make me want to vomit pea soup!

One of the worst clichés is the invincible villain. Some of them have reasons (ghost killer, zombie, indestructible monster, etc.) but most of them don’t. Get real!

If I had a cupcake for every time some evil baddie threw an ax or a knife so powerfully and accurately that it defies physics, I’d be a happy foodie. Ugh!

Now onto badass villainesses, from comics to movies to animation to novels, these hardcore chicks are not to be messed with. They take the phrase ‘bad girl’ to a whole new level. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. So tread carefully because these notorious female adversaries will totally cut you. The fearsome girl villain has only one mission—to make the hero’s life a living hell. And you gotta admire her deadly spunk.

Peace, love, and horror flicks,

FRIGHT NIGHT BABBLE

Hey there, Grinning Gremlins!

Today’s post is about female tropes that make me wanna behead my stuffed panda!

The first cliché is the “ordinary girl” (and often unpopular) who discovers her mysterious heritage. After she learns some wicked cool skills and/or unlocks her special powers to kick bad-guy-ass and save the day. Barf!

The second cliché that I’m sick of is the damsel in distress. She’s the dummy, er, passive victim who ends up in some dangerous situation that she can’t escape on her own and must be rescued by the hot male character. Seriously?

And then there’s the kickass female lead. It seems tons of paranormal romance and urban fantasy storylines feature an aggressive, tough-talking heroine, who’s cold heart melts after she meets the sexy alpha male. What’s especially annoying is when this strong chick isn’t such a snarky ass-kicker once she finally gets some lovin’ from her stud-muffin. Isn’t this depiction demeaning to all women? Ugh!

Peace, love, and horror flicks,
Sloane

Greetings, Fellow Horrorphilas!

These movie tropes make me wanna kick over a headstone.

Sometimes I wonder what the heck these movie writers are thinking. For instance, even in a gun-toting-crazy America, most people actually know very little about guns, so Hollywood should do more fact-checking before penning a script.

Like when a character shoots the villain once instead of emptying the clip. C’mon, everyone knows you double-tap. So dumb! And then they leave the weapon next to the body. Seriously? I guess most characters who carry guns consider ammunition optional. Ugh.

And what about those annoying survivors who walk over the villain’s body and get their ankle grabbed? Is there no other way out of the room? *Eye roll*

Start being more creative, filmmakers!

Peace, love, and horror flicks,
Sloane

FRIGHT NIGHT BABBLE

Greetings, Fellow Horrorphilas!

In this frightfully cool editorial, I will alert you to clichés in all types of entertainment from fiction to cinema.

So let me begin by saying, Hollywood needs more unique villains. I’m so sick of the sinister covert agency or the evil corporation that captures aliens, which they claim don’t officially exist, and then do experiments on their corpses.

Or the ominous laboratory where immoral geniuses stockpile a zombie-making virus—just in case. The problem is that these so-called clever scientists don’t create a vaccine. Duh!

Sometimes these same criminal masterminds even invent clones, cyborgs, or genetically engineered humans, and then release them onto the world, because, well, why not? Lame-o!

Peace, love, and horror flicks,
Sloane
